In the petrochemical, power generation, and gas industries, "Safety" is the number one priority. Materials used to fabricate Pressure Vessels or Boilers must be specialized grades designed specifically to withstand high internal pressure. This material is known as "Pressure Vessel Plate" or commonly referred to as "Boiler Plate".
Today, Trinity Dynamic will guide you through the industry-standard ASTM A516 Grade 70 and explain why it is the top choice for engineers worldwide.
What is Boiler Plate? How is it different from Structural Steel?
A common question is, "Can I use standard mild steel (SS400 / A36) for pressure tanks?" The answer is a strictly NO!
- Structural Steel (e.g., SS400): Designed for static loads (buildings/bridges). The material may contain impurities or air pockets which can lead to cracks or catastrophic explosions when subjected to high pressure or temperature fluctuations.
- Boiler Plate (PVQ Steel): Classified as Pressure Vessel Quality. Its chemical composition (especially Sulfur and Phosphorus) is strictly controlled to ensure high Toughness and ductility, preventing brittle fracture under stress.
Understanding ASTM A516 / ASME SA516
The most widely accepted standard for boiler steel comes from the USA:
- ASTM A516: Standard Specification by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
- ASME SA516: Identical standard adopted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for use in the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
Most Trinity Dynamic plates are Dual Certified, meeting both ASTM and ASME requirements.
Why Grade 70? (A516 Gr.70)
The A516 standard includes grades 55, 60, 65, and 70. These numbers represent the Minimum Tensile Strength in ksi.
In Thailand and globally, Grade 70 is the most popular because it offers the highest strength while maintaining excellent weldability. This allows engineers to design tanks with thinner walls compared to lower grades, saving material costs without compromising safety.
Applications of Boiler Plate
This steel grade is ideal for moderate to lower-temperature services requiring high notch toughness, such as:
- LPG, NGV Storage Tanks, and Ammonia Tanks
- Industrial Boilers
- Heat Exchangers
- Oil & Gas Separators
Why Buy from Trinity Dynamic?
Because pressure applications involve safety risks, we supply only premium Boiler Plates imported from world-class mills. Every plate comes with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) verifying the heat number and mechanical properties.
We also offer CNC Gas & Plasma Cutting Services according to your drawings, whether you need circles, rings, or custom shapes, ready for fabrication.
